THE MONUMENTAL SERIES — Curatorial Statement

Joanna Wolthuizen, 2025

Joanna Wolthuizen’s Monumental paintings translate Composed Abstraction™ into architectural scale, where colour assumes structural mass and stillness establishes a sustained field of spatial presence.

An architecture of presence — where structure expands and stillness becomes scale.

The works in Monumental extend the language of Composed Abstraction™ into spatial gravity.

Geometry shifts from the intimate toward the architectural, unfolding across planes that suggest façade, threshold, and horizon.

Each composition sustains tension between weight and openness, containment and release.

Rather than describing buildings, the paintings evoke the emotional condition of architecture itself permanence, alignment, and the quiet authority of form held in space.

Together, the works propose a field of presence — where colour carries mass, proportion becomes structure, and stillness attains monument.
