Acrylic and dimensional elements on panel
Black Tasmanian oak float frame

Original artwork · Unique work
Signed and dated verso

RELIEF I marks a new dimension within Joanna Wolthuizen’s practice, extending the architectural language of Composed Abstraction™ beyond the painted surface.

Geometric planes advance and recede, transforming line into edge and colour into physical form. Light and shadow become active elements within the composition, shifting subtly as the work is experienced from different positions and throughout the day.

Neither painting nor sculpture alone, RELIEF I explores painting as spatial structure — an object that occupies architecture rather than simply existing within it.

Restrained in palette and monumental in presence, the work continues Wolthuizen’s investigation of architecture, memory and the persistence of form, while introducing depth as a new compositional language.

Painting becomes object.
Form becomes space.

Details

Constructed and painted by hand in Melbourne. Finished with a low-sheen surface and presented in a custom black Tasmanian oak float frame. The dimensional elements create varying depths across the surface, producing natural shadow and a changing relationship with ambient light.

Certificate of Authenticity included.
