AXIOM — SANCTUM I
180cm x 240cmAcrylic and mineral pigment on canvas
SANCTUM I extends the architectural language of stillness.
A pale mineral field is grounded by a low earthen plane and contained by a deep vertical form. A restrained horizontal beam introduces measured human proportion within silence. The composition holds tension between enclosure and openness — weight and breath.
Built through layered veils of matte pigment and finely sanded surface, the painting absorbs light rather than reflecting it, recalling aged plaster, stone, and interior space. Subtle tonal shifts unfold slowly, rewarding sustained looking.
Within Joanna Wolthuizen’s Composed Abstraction™, Sanctum I marks a further distillation of structure into atmosphere — where geometry becomes presence and restraint becomes authority.
