The Vivid Series — A Curatorial Essay

A body of work exploring the architecture of motion — where colour, rhythm, and light converge in equilibrium. Through expressive geometry and a radiant palette, each painting becomes a living structure: a composition of vitality, clarity, and emotional resonance.

Where The Mineral Series invites reflection, The Vivid Series invites movement — a dialogue between containment and release, structure and surge.

Essay — Radiance in Motion

In The Vivid Series, Joanna Wolthuizen extends her language of Composed Abstraction™ into a brighter register — one of kinetic harmony and luminous precision. These works mark an evolution from stillness to vitality, where rhythm becomes architecture and colour assumes the role of light in motion.

Across the series, Wolthuizen constructs a dynamic landscape of form and flux. Planes of ultramarine, vermilion, coral, and gold pulse against one another in measured sequence; each composition balances exacting geometry with an emotional sense of expansion. Here, structure breathes. The edge becomes a site of momentum, and colour transforms into energy held within form.

Within this choreography, there is grace. Each line and junction becomes an act of alignment — not control but conversation. Her compositions trace a visual rhythm akin to music: intervals of tension and release, of cadence and resolution. They are architectures of energy — built environments for light and feeling.

The titles; Quest, Swell, Apex, Hinterland, Isle, Porthole, Mecca, Coast — form a lexicon of vitality, each suggesting voyage, passage, or ascension. Collectively, they articulate a progression from containment to expansion, from interior reflection toward the open horizon. These are not depictions of place but emotional terrains — the geometry of experience rendered visible.

What distinguishes The Vivid Series is its orchestration of joy. Each painting stands as an affirmation of colour’s structural intelligence — its ability to move, to balance, to illuminate. Through precise rhythm and bold restraint, Wolthuizen transforms the visual into the architectural: energy distilled into order, emotion crystallised as design. Seen together, the works form a continuum of motion — from pulse to radiance.

They mark a period in the artist’s practice defined by renewal: an evolution from equilibrium to expansion, from the weight of stillness to the lightness of becoming.

Within their composure lies exuberance; within their geometry, a profound human rhythm — the architecture of joy.

The Vivid Series stands as an essay in luminosity — a distillation of colour, structure, and emotion into movement.

Each painting is both a statement and a celebration: an architecture of rhythm and radiance, of geometry made alive.
